Roblox vs Fortnite UEFN: Which Is Better for Creators?
Roblox is usually the better choice if you want a huge, young audience, simple tools that run on most computers, and lots of ways to design your own game systems from scratch. Fortnite's Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) is the better choice if you want high-end Unreal Engine visuals, a ready-made shooter and movement toolkit, and access to Fortnite's players, and you have a capable Windows PC. Both are free to start, and both pay creators through their own programs.
Here is how they compare on what matters to creators.
The tools
Roblox Studio is Roblox's free editor. You build worlds from parts and models, and add logic with scripts written in Luau, a language based on Lua. It runs on Windows and Mac and works on modest hardware.
UEFN is a version of Unreal Engine built for making Fortnite islands. You get Unreal's lighting, materials and landscape tools, plus thousands of Fortnite assets and ready-made devices like spawners, item granters and scoreboards. Custom logic is written in Verse, Epic's own programming language. UEFN runs on Windows and benefits from a strong PC.
For hands-on starts, see our guides on how to make a Roblox game and how to make a Fortnite map in UEFN.
Coding: Luau vs Verse
- Luau is beginner-friendly, with a huge amount of tutorials, free models and community answers. Many people learn to code through Roblox.
- Verse is newer and designed with large, long-running games in mind. It has fewer learning resources so far, but UEFN's devices let you build a lot without writing any code.
If you want to build unusual game systems, Roblox gives you more freedom from the ground up. If you want to remix shooter, racing or party game mechanics, UEFN's devices get you there quickly.
Look and feel
UEFN games can look like Fortnite, with Unreal-quality lighting and detail. Roblox games range from blocky and simple to impressively detailed, but they tend to be lighter and run on a wider range of devices, including older phones.

Audience and discovery
Both platforms have very large audiences, and players arrive already looking for something to play, which is a big advantage over launching a game on your own.
- Roblox players skew young and love social, simulator, obby, role-play and tycoon games. Players often follow friends into experiences.
- Fortnite players often look for islands that build on Fortnite's style: shooters, box fights, parkour, racing and horror maps, and they find them through Fortnite's discover screens and creator codes.
On both, a strong thumbnail, a clear title and good retention (players staying and coming back) help your game get recommended. Our guide on how to market an indie game has more on getting noticed.
Earning money
- Roblox creators can sell items, passes and in-experience purchases for Robux, and eligible creators can exchange Robux for real money through the Developer Exchange program.
- Fortnite creators in Epic's island creator program can earn engagement payouts based on how players spend time in their islands, and Epic has expanded ways for creators to earn.
Rules, rates and eligibility (including age requirements) change, so read the official Roblox and Epic creator terms before you plan around any income.
Publishing and updates
Publishing is free on both platforms, and each has its own steps: Roblox experiences are published from Roblox Studio, and Fortnite islands go through Epic's review before they go public. Check each platform's current publishing rules before your launch date. Because updating is quick on both, they are great places to ship early and improve often. Players on both expect regular updates, so plan small, frequent changes rather than one big launch.
Which one should you pick?
- Pick Roblox if: you want to design your own systems, your computer is modest, you use a Mac, or your audience is younger and social.
- Pick UEFN if: you want Fortnite visuals and mechanics, you have a strong Windows PC, and your game fits Fortnite's world.
- Not sure? Build the smallest version of your idea on the platform where you already play. You will learn fast either way.
If you would rather own a standalone game that you sell yourself, consider a general engine instead; see Godot vs Unity vs Unreal.
Building for Roblox or Fortnite with Suma

Suma Studios can build Roblox experiences and Fortnite islands as well as standalone games. You describe the idea in plain words, and the AI team plans it on the chalkboard and builds it in Roblox Studio or UEFN, as long as you have those installed. Fortnite building in Suma is Windows only. You play each version, mark up what should change, and the team keeps going.
FAQ
Is Roblox or Fortnite easier for beginners?
Roblox Studio is usually easier to start with and runs on more computers. UEFN is very approachable if you build with its devices and do not need custom Verse code yet.
Can I use UEFN on a Mac?
UEFN runs on Windows. Roblox Studio runs on both Windows and Mac.
Can I make money on Roblox and Fortnite?
Both platforms have creator earnings programs with their own rules and eligibility. Check the official Roblox and Epic sites for the current terms.
Can I move my game from Roblox to Fortnite?
Not directly. The tools, languages and assets are different, so you would rebuild it. Your design and ideas carry over.
