How to Make a Mobile Game: From Idea to App Store
To make a mobile game, pick an idea that works in short sessions with a thumb or two, build it in an engine that exports to Android and iOS (such as Godot), design touch controls from day one, test on a real phone early and often, then publish through Google Play and the Apple App Store. Each store has its own developer account, fee and review process. Here is the whole path.
What makes a good mobile game idea
Phones are played in short bursts: on a bus, in a queue, before bed. Ideas that tend to work well:
- One-touch or swipe games with simple, satisfying actions.
- Puzzle games with short levels.
- Idle and incremental games that progress while you are away.
- Card, board and turn-based games.
- Short-run arcade games built around beating a high score.
Ask yourself: can someone understand this in five seconds and play a round in two minutes? If yes, you have a phone-friendly idea. Write it up on one page with our game design document guide.
Choose your engine
You need an engine that builds for both Android and iOS. Godot is free and exports to both, and it is a good fit for 2D mobile games. See Godot for beginners if you are new to it. Other engines also export to mobile; pick one whose tutorials you can follow.
One important note: to build for iPhone and iPad and submit to the App Store, you need a Mac with Apple's Xcode.
Design touch controls first
Touch is not a mouse and it is not a controller. Plan for it from the start:
- Keep tap targets big enough for a thumb.
- Keep important buttons away from the very edges and the notch.
- Avoid putting controls where the player's hand covers the action.
- Decide on portrait or landscape early, and stick to it.
- Give instant feedback on every tap: a sound, a small bounce, a flash.
Build a small first version
Build the core loop and nothing else: the main action, a score, a way to restart. Play it on a phone as soon as it runs. Things that feel fine on a monitor can feel cramped, slow or confusing on a small screen.

Test on real devices
Test on more than one phone if you can, including an older or cheaper one. Watch for:
- Frame rate drops and heat on long sessions.
- Text that is too small to read.
- Load times.
- How the game handles being paused, minimized or interrupted by a call.
Then hand it to people who have never seen it, and watch them play without explaining anything. Our playtesting guide explains what to look for.
Making a mobile game with an AI team
Suma Studios builds mobile games for phones and tablets as well as PC and web games. The team adds touch controls and helps with app store steps, and with the full version you can test on your own phone by scanning a code. If your game needs a mobile specialist, you can hire one for $4.99 who focuses on touch controls, phones and tablets, and app stores. See who you can hire.

You describe the game in plain words, the team builds it in Godot, and you play each version and say what should change.
Publishing to Google Play and the App Store
Each store needs a developer account. At the time of writing, Google Play charges a one-time registration fee and Apple charges a yearly membership fee; check both sites for the current amounts and rules, since they change.
For each store you will need:
- An app icon and screenshots in the required sizes.
- A short and a long description.
- An age rating, from each store's questionnaire.
- A privacy policy, especially if your game collects any data or shows ads.
- A signed build that passes review.
Apple's review usually checks more closely, so leave time for a round of fixes.
How mobile games make money
The common models are a one-time price, free with ads, free with in-app purchases, or a mix. Whatever you choose, keep it fair. Players are quick to leave games that feel greedy, and stores have strict rules about how purchases and ads are shown.
FAQ
Can I make a mobile game for free?
You can build one for free with a free engine like Godot. Publishing costs money because both stores charge developer account fees.
Do I need a Mac to make an iPhone game?
To build and submit an iOS app, yes, you need a Mac with Xcode. You can build and test the Android version on Windows.
How long does it take to make a mobile game?
A simple one-mechanic game can be playable in days. A polished game ready for the stores usually takes a few months.
Should my first mobile game be free?
Many first games are free so more people try them. That is a reasonable choice for learning, but it is your call.
